The Folkestone gold mini bars (1 ounce and 2 ounce) I suspect were buried using an auger to take them out of range of metal detectors and encourage deep digging to sculpture the beach. I did make a couple of searches there but found little other than washers which had been liberally scattered to deter metal detectors. There must still be a fair amount of gold not found as in this situation it is unlikely that all would be recovered. The last time I was there, a local resident told me that large amounts of sand had been taken from the harbour site around to the main beach. There’s two places to search now.

I have a metal detecting permission within a mile of the findspot of the Ringlemere gold cup. While it pales into insignificance when compared to the cup, I did find a Bronze Age founder’s hoard of scrap tools etc. there. I wonder what else may turn up in the area.
