Whitstable’s first guide book embellished with:
- 75 additional images
- annotations throughout
This 1876 Guide to Whitstable and its Surroundings was Whitstable’s first guide book written and published by William John Cox (1844-1911). It contained only one illustration, that of the late Lord of the Manor, Wynn Ellis. The book had 61 printed pages of text followed by 21 pages of advertisements and was produced in a pocket-sized 175mm x 115mm, with a coloured card cover. This particular cover is pink with a view of Whitstable from Tankerton Hill but I have also seen yellow covers and there are at least four different views of Whitstable. A later illustrated version was produced c.1884, containing eight plates. The Guide contains a wealth of information, much still of interest to today’s resident and visitor. Since the original guide is becoming difficult to obtain, I have prepared this new edition, following the Guide to see what has changed and what remains, adding illustrations and [notes] along the way, while leaving most of the original text.
